Partners from the PROVIDE project participated in COP29 delivering two key talks at the Cryosphere Pavilion on November 19 and 20, 2024.

In the first talk, the PROVIDE team presented findings demonstrating that achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement is critical to preventing dangerous tipping points in the Earth’s climate system. The discussion focused on the impacts of climate change on permafrost, peatlands, glaciers, and sea ice, highlighting the risk of irreversible damage. The PROVIDE Climate Risk Dashboard, an innovative online tool, was introduced to help stakeholders track key climate thresholds and understand the actions necessary to avoid surpassing them.

In the second panel, it was emphasized that, alongside drastic emissions reductions, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is essential for achieving net-zero emissions and potentially slowing long-term global warming. The panel explored various CDR methods, weighing both their potential benefits and possible risks, while underscoring the urgent need for a proactive CDR strategy to protect vulnerable ice-covered regions and minimize long-term climate risks.
